Position Description

Responsible for daily management and supervision of SCA High School conservation crew in a backcountry or frontcountry with six – eight high school student members. Assist co-leader in managing student and group safety and development, cooking, camp life, and work project completion. Represent SCA on-site and coordinate with Agency Coordinator on designated projects.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all SCA policies and procedures as required for the position.   
  • Manage budget and all necessary purchasing for crew and project.
  • Manage relationship with agency partner.  This includes coordinating all logistical and operational work and how it relates to the partner, project, and the crew.
  • Facilitate crew operations such as food planning/purchasing, tool and equipment logistics, tool maintenance, and work schedule.
  • Manage all medical and first aid aspects of the crew, along with the required documentation.
  • Communicate with full time SCA field staff as required and as needed.
  • Supervise crew members on a full time basis, 24 hrs./day, 7 days/week for the length of the program (typically 15, 21, 30, and 35 days).
  • Train and supervise crew members in safe and proper use of tools and all aspects of the service project (may include trail construction, maintenance, wildlife habitat work, site restoration, etc.
  • Organize and lead recreation trip after completion of work project (typically backpacking, hiking, canoeing, or sightseeing).
  • Complete required post-program paperwork and documentation

 Qualifications

  1. Be at least 21 years old.
  2. Successful completion of motor vehicle and criminal background check
  3. Must have the ability to legally work in the U.S; possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.
  4. Must possess current required first aid certification & CPR by the start date of the orientation training.
  5. Youth/Young Adult Programming. Documented experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18) as a teacher, mentor, leader, counselor or coach.
  6. Teaching / Leadership. Experience working in an informal or formal educational environment. Demonstrated ability to organize and effectively teach lessons, motivate teenage and/or young adult students, provide and accept constructive feedback and communicate effectively. 
  7. Outdoor Education / Skills. Experience with outdoor living skills, including: hiking, safety awareness, LNT, camping, cooking, basic map/compass skills., etc.
  8. Conservation Project Skills.  Experience in service project management, service learning, conservation, or trail/conservation projects and hand tool use. May also include experience with carpentry, landscaping, gardening, etc.

  • Crew leader compensation will be determined by a daily rate for a fixed number of program days (based on the # of days students are on-site). CL will be paid a $300 portion of their total compensation for their pre-program responsibilities, which includes communication with crew members and agencies, review of relevant SCA manuals and documentation, and for the duration of their participation in training. The remaining portion of their compensation will be paid during their program.
  • CL will be paid $300 regardless of their time spent at training. (Veteran CL, New hire, or Exempt) Again, this compensation is not specifically for training, but for all pre-program work.

 Additional Benefits

  • SCA Training. All Crew Leaders participate in 4-day Orientation and new Crew Leaders attend 5-day Conservation Skills training. Meals & Lodging covered.
  • Travel. All Crew Leaders receive up to $500 to cover travel and travel related expenses for their travel to SCA Training and to each program site.
  • Professional Development. Veteran SCA Leaders are eligible to apply for reimbursement grants for professional certifications (WFA, WFR, S212, LNT, etc).
