National Crew Staff

Doug Caum
National Director (Charlestown, NH)

After being raised by wolves and living in a prairie dog community for years, Doug joined SCA as the Assistant Director for Conservation Crews. Doug also spent 10 years teaching and directing an outdoor education program in New Mexico, working as a field instructor for NOLS and teaching for the Wilderness Medicine Institute. While living on the prairie, he completed online degrees in Recreation (B.A), Environmental Education (M.A.), and Regionalism and Historic Preservation (Graduate Certificate). He now lives in Chester, VT with family, dogs, cats, chickens, and of course, prairie dogs.

Lewis Shelley
Training Manager (Charlestown, NH)

Lew has been involved with outdoor education since 1974. He is an alumnus of Outward Bound and NOLS, and leads trips with them annually. From 1991-1997 he led SCA crews from Vermont to Alaska. After a short stint as SCA staff in 1994, he joined SCA full time in 1998 and served in program management positions. He now focuses solely on the development and implementation of training. Since 1991, he has been an instructor and chief instructor for innumerable SCA Conservation Skills trainings. He is a Wilderness First Responder and certified in Avalanche training through work with National Ski Patrol. Among other things, Lew is also a certified canoe instructor (American Canoe Association), a USFS B-Feller Chainsaw Operator, and received Bear Safety and Firearms Training from the USFWS (Alaska). He serves as the NH State Advocate for Leave No Trace and is a LNT Master Educator. Locally he serves on his town Conservation Commission and the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail Club Board of Directors. He enjoys carpentry, forestry, and as a self proclaimed ‘fun hog’, is often pursuing his favorite activities: hiking, climbing, cycling, paddling, and especially, any form of skiing.

Nikki Royce
Placement Manager (Charlestown, NH)

Nikki came to SCA after a three year stint in Alaska gold mining, driving tour buses and living close to a glacier. Now, she spends her time thinking of ways to drive people crazy by constantly pushing the envelope of how we do things at SCA. Nikki started at SCA in 2001 as an Intern Representative. Since then, she has worked with Corps and now both Corps and Crew as the Placement Manager. Nikki grew up in the White Mountains of NH which is just a bit north of headquarters. She now calls Charlestown her home where she lives with her husband and pansy dog, Madi. Nikki has two goals this summer: to get Madi to go out in the rain and to go on a NOLS course. The first goal will be the toughest. Anyone know how to make a doggy umbrella?

Nelson Bruni
Equipment Manager (Charlestown, NH)

Nelson manages the gear, cache, and pro-deals for the HS Program and other departments at SCA, is a member of the SCA Green Up Team, and is an SCA Duty Officer. He has been with SCA for nearly 10 years, having been a Corps member with the NH Parks AmeriCorps and the Big Cypress Restoration Corps and a lead recruiting intern out of the Charlestown office. He has also led 7 SCA high school conservation crews, as well as leading trail crews for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the State of South Carolina, and the Squam Lakes Association. Nelson is Wilderness First Responder certified, has thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, and is a veteran of the US Coast Guard. He has a beautiful cat named Avery, enjoys a good cup or three of coffee a day, the thrills of organic gardening, and life in beautiful southern Vermont.

Liz Vogel
Eastern Program Manager (Charlestown, NH)

Liz started leading crews with SCA in 2001 and has been hooked ever since. She was a member of the Adirondack Americorps Program in 02-03, did an internship in Canyonlands NP, and has led high school crews in MS, IN, VA, twice in Yellowstone, and has participated on Fall crews. She started as Placement Assistant in 2007 and currently manages all aspects of the National programs in the eastern portion of the country. She is a WFR, loves rock work and a good local pulled pork sandwich. You can find her raging around the forest in all seasons, on skis or in boots, and has often been seen paddling and jumping into the CT River no matter what the weather.

Sarah Zablocki-Axling
Northwest Program Manager (Port Townsend, WA)

Sarah has been with SCA since 1998 and as staff since March of 2004 managing high school crews throughout the greater Northwest region. She started her time with SCA with three internships in PA, CO and WA. She then led crews and did trail work with SCA and other groups in AK, OR, HI and NY. As Program Manager, she develops partnership, administers the program logistics for western-based crews and hires, trains, supervises and supports SCA crew leaders. Sarah also oversees the unique International Program and our Marine Science Programs. She holds B.A. degrees in Environmental Studies and English from Binghamton University, Certificate in Nonprofit Management, is a Master Gardener, Wilderness First Responder and a Leave No Trace Trainer. Look for her in a sunny spot outside and know that you can bribe her with ice cream.

Tom Moutsos
Southwest Program Manager (Oakland, CA)

Tom served as a Private in Company C of the 150th PA Bucktails Regiment Civil War Reenactment group.  He was drummed out of the group for 1. Cowardice (running away on the field of a fake battle) and 2. Not being able to shoot a buck so as to put its tail on his hat (though he has killed many, many animals with his car).  Tom started working for SCA in 2000 and worked on trail crews for the National Park Service and was a Peace Corps Volunteer from ‘06-’08.  Currently, Tom works in SCA’s Oakland Office and oversees High Shool crews in the Southwest.  He hopes to one day be re-instated in the glorious Bucktails.

Jennifer Millay-Scott
Member Representative (Charlestown, NH)

Jennifer Millay-Scott, was born in the fabulous 70’s, growing up in the beautiful state of Vermont. Very close to SCA’s headquarters.  I have worked at SCA for five years, starting as a placement assistant with the Placement team for the Conservation Internship program, later becoming the Admissions Assistant, helping many candidates navigate the application processes for our programs and assisting in placing many candidates in internships. This past November I moved over to Crew placement team as Member Representative, which entails reviewing and placing for the National Conservation Crew program this summer.  I am a mom to an amazing nine year old girl. She keeps me very busy with all of her activities. My husband and I spend much of our time, when not working, spending time as a family. We love to travel and be with our friends!

Jessica Gunsell
Placement Assistant (Charlestown, NH)

After escaping the confines of a Community College classroom, Jessica discovered the world of SCA. Her new found family, contra dances, a penny whistle and the rainy trees of Washington took her in with open arms, and she has never looked back. After six High School crews, from the West Coast to the East Coast, with brief visits back to the family farm, and an odd nursery job or two tucked in between summers, Jessica filled a piece of her heart with the Western Sonoran Desert, the smell of Creosote, and the ironic nature of planting dead bushes. This brought her back to the dessert again for a different reason entirely; rather than restore, and bring life back to the Desert, she thought it would be a fun twist to run around with a chainsaw instead, wrecking havoc on the unsuspecting Tamarisk, with her team of four innocent, but eager interns. The next step to take after that would be to join the High School Program at none other than Headquarters in New Hampshire, as the new Placement Assistant, answering phones and getting lost in MAX. (it’s only logical to move from the toasty warm, sunny Southern California Desert to snowy New England, right?) But she is loving every minute of the newly discovered Winter, and hopes that everyone won’t make too much fun of her on cross country skis.

Roger Dunn
Eastern Program Coordinator (Charlestown, NH)

Roger and his truck Henry just recently made the move to SCA Headquarters.  He comes to us from the great state of Kentucky where the snowfall amounts this winter have exceeded those of his new home in the greater Connecticut River Valley (not supposed to happen that way).  He recently graduated from the University of Tennessee-Martin receiving his degree in Geography.  Roger is a veteran crew leader leading high school crews in Big South Fork, Pecos NHP, and Denali N.P.  Prior to SCA he taught outdoor education in Texas for five years, severed with an AmeriCorps program in Elkhart, Indiana for two years, and has worked 11 seasons at various summer camps.  Roger has many interests in life including being a fan of almost every sport ever invented.  His favorite sports include:  baseball, football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, bowling, curling, ice hockey, and skipping rocks.  Roger loves to cook, read, hike, camp, listen to live music, and sit by a campfire.  On occasions late at night by the light of a full moon, you might here Roger belting out the sounds of, “My Old Kentucky Home”.  This should not be taken as an indication he is not enjoying his new surroundings of New Hampshire.  It is just his way of staying true to his roots!

Kory Hottel
Northwest Program Coordinator (Port Townsend, WA)

I have worked with the SCA for 7 years leading summer high school crews in Denali National Park, Guadalupe National Park, the North Cascades National Park and the Clearwater National Forest. I am also an SCA Work Skills Instructor for Crew Leader training and hold a current Wilderness First Responder Certification. I am once again based out of Port Townsend, Washington as the Northwest Program Coordinator. I have spent the remainder of my time building log cabins, fixing heavy equipment, and welding various things back together in Colorado and Antarctica. With that being said I have come across a few things that I could not fix and have meet so many good people while trying to do so!

Justin Laue
Southwest Program Coordinator (Oakland, CA)

Before joining SCA, Justin pursued a brief career as a professional triathlete. He raced in Europe, living off of moldy cheese and bread for months on end. After representing the USA at the World Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, Justin decided to leave the land of fondue, small cars, and German techno in favor of a career in conservation. In 2006, Justin joined SCA as the Program Coordinator in SCA’s Oakland regional office. His primary responsibilities include coordinating SCA’s school year program for urban based youth and making sure that summer crews run smoothly. Justin is a graduate of UC Berkeley where he studied Environmental Policy and wrote his thesis on private enterprise promotion in America’s National Parks.
