Recommended Reading
Below is a list of books recommended by SCA leaders and staff. These books are great resources for campfire reading, environmental education, or to add to a cache library for sharing. If you have a suggestion, pass it on to jlaue@thesca.org.
Deep Survival: Why highly capable & trained people still make stupid mistakes. It discusses how our brains learn the lessons we learn, how they apply those lessons to reality and how/when that screws us up. A navy seal makes a dumb mistake and dies in a guided white water trip; why one mountaineer survives a 3 day white out and his buddy doesn’t; etc. A little morbid but fascinating material.
Ohlone Way: This book is a captivating account and documentation of California prior to European arrival. Although the setting is in California, the theme of the book is easily transferable to a multitude of other geographic regions. The Ohlone Way is a great way to incorporate Environmental Education into your crew curriculum.
The Lorax: Dr. Seuss just seems to have a way with words and kiddos–he’s timeless.
Lightly on the Land by Robert C. Birkby
Outdoor Leadership by John Graham
The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter (great read aloud!)
Animal, Vegetable , Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
